Accra is the capital of Ghana and the main base for remote workers in the country. This guide covers internet speed, power cuts, rent, visa rules, time zones, coworking, safety, and the best months to go. Figures were checked in October 2026, and the article says so where sources disagree.
How Fast Is the Internet in Accra?
Speed depends on the provider, and the two main data sources do not agree with each other.
- Fixed broadband: Ookla’s Speedtest Global Index for May 2026 shows a Ghana median of 48.72 Mbps download. The country ranks 112th out of 149.
- Browser tests: SpeedOf.Me recorded a median of 9.9 Mbps download and 119 ms latency in the first half of 2026.
- Providers: MTN Ghana won three Ookla awards at Mobile World Congress 2026, including fastest mobile network in Ghana. In the SpeedOf.Me data, MTN led at 13 Mbps, ahead of Telecel at 10 Mbps.
- Data costs: One guide lists 10 to 30 euros a month for 10 to 50 GB of mobile data. Home internet costs about $30 a month, according to Expat Exchange.
The two sources measure different things, so the speed in a given apartment may fall anywhere between them. Checking the wifi speed before you book a stay avoids surprises. A second connection from another provider, such as an eSIM or local SIM card, covers outages.
How Reliable Is the Power in Accra?
Power cuts, known locally as dumsor, have affected Accra repeatedly in 2026. The Electricity Company of Ghana announced planned maintenance cuts of four to eight hours in parts of the city during June, August, and September. A wider outage on July 29 hit Accra, Kumasi, and other regions before dawn.
The Ministry of Energy has announced an 18-month plan that costs at least GH₵4 billion. It starts with 11 new power station transformers in Greater Accra, followed by 30 more.
- Planned cuts: The utility posts outage notices on Facebook, so a weekly look helps with scheduling calls.
- Backup power: Apartments with a generator or inverter keep a router running. Asking the landlord before signing is worthwhile.
- Coworking power: A local property site says Impact Hub Accra has fast internet and dedicated electric power.
- Plugs: Type G plugs work in Ghana. The power adapter and voltage guide covers what else to pack.

What Does It Cost to Live in Accra?
Rent is the largest cost, and sources give very different numbers.
- One-bedroom rent: World Cost of Living data shows about $700 in the center and $350 outside it. Startup Guide lists GH₵2,000 to GH₵5,000 ($360 to $910) for a furnished one-bedroom in prime areas.
- Prime areas: Ownkey puts a one-bedroom in Cantonments or Airport Residential at GH₵7,000 to GH₵15,000.
- Total for one person: Ownkey estimates GH₵2,050 to GH₵4,300 a month in Lapaz, Achimota, and Dome. In Cantonments or Airport Residential the range is GH₵10,500 to GH₵22,000. Both totals include rent, utilities, transport, and food.
- Food: A simple meal can cost GH₵15, or about $2.70. Supermarkets cost more than open-air markets.
- Transport: A 5 km Uber ride costs about $2.50. Many nomads choose Uber or Bolt over public transport.
Rent terms matter as much as rent prices. Landlords can legally ask for six months of rent in advance, and most ask for one or two years. An agency fee of about one month of rent is also common. Nomads staying a few months may find serviced apartments or short-term rentals easier to arrange. Listings on Meqasa show current cedi prices.
Visa and Entry Rules for Remote Workers
Ghana has no dedicated digital nomad visa as of July 2026. Remote workers usually enter on a tourist or business e-visa. These rules were checked on October 4, 2026 and can change.
- E-visa: Ghana is moving to a national e-visa system, and one guide dates the portal launch to May 25, 2026.
- Stay length: Tourist and business visas allow up to 30 days per entry, according to the Ghana Immigration Service as reported by Legit.ng.
- Fee: The same report lists $260 for a tourist visa. Some other sites show lower fees, so confirming the price on the official site is wise.
- Yellow fever: Travelers aged 9 months and over must show a valid yellow fever certificate on arrival.
- African passports: Holders of African passports have had visa-free entry since January 2025.
- Stays over 90 days: Serbia’s foreign ministry notes a registration rule. Staying more than 90 days in a calendar year requires a non-citizen ID card from the National Identification Authority.
The 30-day limit means longer stays need an extension, a different visa category, or repeated entries. Ghana has no rules written for remote workers, so the nearest Ghanaian embassy can confirm what applies. The post on digital nomad visa vs tourist visa explains which one a remote worker needs. For comparison, Kenya now offers a Class N permit, covered in the Nairobi guide.
Time Zone Fit
Ghana uses UTC+0 all year and does not change its clocks. The offsets from Accra are below.
- UK: Accra has the same time in winter and is one hour behind in summer.
- Central Europe: Accra is one hour behind in winter and two hours behind in summer.
- US Eastern: Accra is five hours ahead in winter and four hours ahead in summer.
- US Pacific: Accra is eight hours ahead in winter and seven hours ahead in summer.
UK and European clients fit best, since the whole workday overlaps. A 3 pm call in Accra is 10 am in New York in winter and 11 am in summer. US West Coast clients allow only early-morning calls, such as 4 pm in Accra for 8 am in Los Angeles in winter. The post on managing client meetings across multiple time zones has scheduling tips.
Coworking and Community
Accra’s coworking scene leans toward startups and entrepreneurs more than travelers. Several spaces take day users.
- Impact Hub Accra: In Osu, founded in 2013, with pay-as-you-go desks, networking mixers, and pitch events.
- Kukun: Serviced offices and meeting rooms in Osu.
- Ghana Innovation Hub: In the Accra Digital Centre on Ring Road West. It welcomes day users and long-term members.
- Regus: Serviced offices and coworking in Roman Ridge.
- Other options: Workshed, iSpace, and HapaSpace.
The sources found did not publish current prices, so asking each space for its day pass rate is the next step. Research did not turn up a well-documented nomad coliving network in Accra. NomadList, Facebook groups, and Meetup are the places to find nomad events.

Best Neighborhoods for Remote Workers
Living far from the center costs less, but the daily traffic frustrates many residents.
- Osu: Restaurants, bars, and nightlife on Oxford Street, a short drive from the beach. Impact Hub and Kukun are both here.
- Labone: Quieter and residential, within walking distance of the Labone Coffee Strip restaurants.
- East Legon: A family suburb with malls, gyms, and three international schools within 10 minutes. The airport is a 15 to 20 minute drive.
- Cantonments: A diplomatic area and one of the most expensive neighborhoods, with heavy traffic on Cantonments Road at peak hours.
- Airport Residential: Close to Kotoka airport, Accra Mall, and Marina Mall, with high rents.
- Spintex: Described by Ownkey as a good value area for expats.
Is Accra Safe for Remote Workers?
Accra is usually manageable with standard city precautions, but several warnings are worth reading.
- US advisory: Reports on the July 2026 US advisory say Ghana is Level 2 overall, with four areas at Level 3. The advisory cites crime, limited health services, violence against women, and violence against lesbian and gay travelers.
- UK advice: The UK government advises against all but essential travel to the Bawku Municipality in the Upper East region, far from Accra.
- Street crime: Phone and bag snatching, sometimes by people on motorbikes, are reported. Pickpocketing is common in markets and crowded areas.
- Airport scams: World Nomads reports thieves posing as airport staff at Kotoka International Airport.
- Safer areas: Meqasa lists Airport Residential, Cantonments, Osu, and East Legon among the safer neighborhoods, citing active police stations.
- Flooding: Heavy rain flooded parts of Accra in June 2026, and the government issued a flood safety advisory on June 29.
- Health: Malaria risk is high all year, including in Accra, so a travel clinic can advise on prevention. The best medical care is in Accra, with limited emergency services elsewhere. Health insurance with emergency evacuation cover is advisable.
- LGBTQ+ travelers: Ghanaian law criminalizes same-sex relationships, with penalties of up to three years in prison.
Opportunistic theft is the most commonly reported problem. Keeping phones out of sight and using ride apps after dark lowers most of the risk.
Best Time to Go to Accra
- November to March: The main dry season. Highs reach about 32°C and lows about 25°C from December to February. Harmattan dust blows from December to February, and air quality is weakest in December.
- March to May: The hottest months, as the rains begin.
- May to June: The major rainy season, with June the wettest month.
- September to October: A shorter rainy season.
- July and August: A short dry spell. The Chale Wote Street Art Festival takes place in August.
February is the least busy month, with lower accommodation prices. August brings a short dry spell and a festival.

Who Accra Suits and Who Should Skip It
Accra suits these remote workers:
- Remote workers on UK or European client hours.
- Founders and freelancers who want a startup community and an English-speaking base in West Africa.
- People with a mid-range budget and a plan for power cuts.
Accra may not suit these readers:
- Anyone who needs fast, steady internet at a low cost.
- Anyone who needs a formal visa for a stay longer than 30 days.
- LGBTQ+ travelers, given the law.
- Anyone who prefers a more established African nomad scene. The Cape Town guide covers another African city popular with remote workers.
Plan Your Trip to Accra
Accra works best for remote workers who plan around its 30-day visa limit, power cuts, and advance rent rules. Those on European hours get easy calls, a growing startup scene, and warm weather in the dry months. A first month in Osu or East Legon makes a useful test before a longer stay. If Accra fits your next stretch of work, search flights to Accra on FlyBibe and choose dates in January, February, or August.
