Argentina Digital Nomad Visa: Requirements and How to Apply

Argentina offers remote workers a short residence permit called Residencia Transitoria como Nómada Digital. The permit lasts up to 180 days and can be extended once for another 180. The sections below cover who qualifies, the documents, the fees in pesos and dollars, and the steps to apply. All details were checked against Argentine government pages on November 1, 2026.

What Is the Argentina Digital Nomad Visa?

Argentina grants this program as a transitory residence for people who work remotely for clients or employers abroad. The Dirección Nacional de Migraciones (Migraciones) runs it, and the official pages still list it as open.

  • Official name: Residencia Transitoria como Nómada Digital.
  • Legal basis: Disposición DNM 758/2022, issued under article 24, section h, of Migration Law 25.871. The rule took effect on May 21, 2022.
  • Length: Up to 180 days, with one extension of the same length.
  • Work allowed: Remote work done with computers or telecommunications for people or companies based outside Argentina.

The program suits a stay of several months. The sources checked do not describe a direct route from this permit to permanent residence.

Who Can Apply?

Eligibility depends on nationality and on the kind of work. The rules come from the Migraciones service pages and the Argentine consulate in Toronto.

  • Nationality: Citizens of countries that do not need a tourist visa for Argentina. Mercosur and associated-state nationals may also use ID documents listed in a Mercosur travel agreement, and they pay lower fees.
  • Type of work: Independent or employed remote work for clients or employers outside Argentina.
  • Proof of work: A contract, a company endorsement, certifications, or income or fee receipts, plus at least one reference tied to your occupation.
  • Income minimum: None is published on the official pages checked.

Many third-party guides name a monthly minimum of US$1,500, US$2,000, or US$2,500. The three figures disagree, and none appears on an official page. Migraciones can ask for more evidence, so a current contract and several months of income records are sensible to prepare. Minimums in other countries are listed in a guide to income requirements by country.

Passport holders from countries that need a tourist visa fall outside this route, according to the same pages. Readers with such a passport can compare other options in a guide to visas for non-Western passports.

Health insurance is a separate question. The nomad service pages do not list it. Decree 366/2025 added a sworn declaration of health insurance at entry. A law firm summary says the rule can be enforced only after the government regulates it (article 123 bis). A June 2026 court ruling declared the decree null in one citizenship case, so its status may shift. The same summary says foreigners without permanent residence receive routine care in national public facilities against insurance or payment. Because of that, health insurance plans for nomads are worth comparing.

How to Apply

Argentina has three routes, and the right one depends on where you are when you apply.

Route 1: TIE 24H, online from abroad. TIE 24H is the electronic entry procedure on the official Migraciones page.

  1. Gather the documents listed in the next section.
  2. Prepare the passport photo page and a new face photo as JPG files.
  3. Open the TIE 24H portal from the official Migraciones page and choose the digital nomad procedure.
  4. Upload the files and pay any fee the portal or your consulate asks for.
  5. Wait for the decision by email. The Toronto consulate says complete files usually get an answer in 10 to 15 business days.
  6. Keep the approval email. Show it to the border officer when you arrive.

Route 2: Through a consulate. The Toronto consulate takes applications by email. The consulate reviews the documents, asks for the fee, and then schedules an interview. The consulate advises applying at least 45 days before travel, and the file is not processed until all documents and the payment arrive. Other consulates may work differently, so the nearest one can confirm its own process.

Route 3: In person inside Argentina. The service page for applicants already in the country lists regular entry as a requirement. People in Buenos Aires contact Migraciones by email, and people elsewhere visit their local Migraciones office. A person already in Argentina as a tourist can ask Migraciones whether this route fits.

Look-alike sites can copy government visa systems, so the web address should end in gob.ar before any passport data is uploaded.

Documents You Need

These are the items the official TIE 24H page lists.

  • Request note: A signed note with your personal details and the independent work you will do.
  • Short CV: Your experience in your field and your level of education or training.
  • Passport: A valid passport, shown as an image of the photo page in JPG format. The Toronto consulate also asks for six months of validity and one blank page.
  • New photo: A face-only photo on a white background, taken when you upload the file. An older photo is not accepted.
  • Proof of activity: A contract, a company endorsement, proof of a work request, certifications, or income or fee receipts.

Migraciones may ask for more proof. Applicants inside Argentina also need an Argentine criminal record certificate, proof of address, and regular entry.

Foreign documents need an apostille if your country belongs to the Hague Convention, or legalization by an Argentine consulate if it does not. The in-country service page also asks for a Spanish translation by a sworn translator whose signature is legalized by the translators’ college. A documents checklist and a guide on how to get documents apostilled cover these steps in more detail.

What Does It Cost?

Migraciones publishes its fees in units called UMSM. The fee table, based on Decree 584/2024 and updated on December 11, 2025, sets 1 UMSM at ARS 1,000. Dollar figures below use about ARS 1,550 per US dollar, a late October 2026 rate.

  • Residence, applied for inside Argentina: 32 UMSM, or ARS 32,000 (about US$21). Mercosur and associated-state nationals pay 16 UMSM, or ARS 16,000 (about US$10).
  • Extension: 40 UMSM, or ARS 40,000 (about US$26). Mercosur and associated-state nationals pay 20 UMSM.
  • Preferential appointment: 50 UMSM, or ARS 50,000 (about US$32), as listed for residence procedures.
  • Electronic entry with a consular step: The table lists 120 consular units for one group and 80 for another. The table does not name this visa, and it gives no peso or dollar value for the unit.
  • Reported total for the consular route: One third-party guide reports about US$200. The figure does not come from the fee table, so the amount is worth confirming with your consulate before paying.

Translations, apostilles, police certificates, and insurance cost extra, and the fee table does not cover them. The peso also moves. El Economista reported the Banco Nación rate at about ARS 1,540 on October 20, 2026. The informal blue rate was ARS 1,540 to buy and ARS 1,560 to sell. With rates that close, a large exchange-rate discount for foreign earners is no longer a safe planning assumption. Readers who earn in one currency and spend in pesos can read about currency exchange risk. Fees in other countries are laid out in a comparison of application fees across countries.

How Long Does It Last, and Can You Extend?

The permit runs up to 180 days. Migraciones allows one extension of the same length, so the most time on this route is about 360 days.

  • Presence rule: The Disposición asks for a stay in Argentina of not less than 50 percent of the period you want to extend.
  • Income proof: Records of income earned from remote work during the permit.
  • Criminal records: A certificate from your country of origin and the Argentine record, which the online system adds.
  • Proof of address: The same address evidence used for the first permit.
  • How to file: In person while you are in Argentina. Buenos Aires residents write to Migraciones, and people elsewhere visit their local office.

Planning for two half-year periods is simple, because the second needs documents ready before the first ends. Details on how other countries handle extensions are in a guide to renewal and extension rules. A guide on how to get a police clearance certificate explains the criminal record step.

Tax Note

The following is general information only and is not tax advice. Argentina’s tax agency, ARCA, lists foreigners without permanent residence as tax residents after 12 months in the country on temporary authorizations. The rule sits in article 116 of the Income Tax Law. For personal deductions, ARCA treats people who live in Argentina for more than six months of the fiscal year as residents.

Some third-party guides cite a 183-day or 90-day trigger. Neither figure appeared on the official ARCA pages checked. Because the visa and its extension can reach 360 days, the 12-month mark may come into view when other stays are added. Your home country and any tax treaty also affect your position, so a qualified tax professional can review your case.

Is the Argentina Digital Nomad Visa Right for You?

The visa fits some remote workers well and leaves others better served by a different route.

A good fit:

  • Remote workers from visa-exempt countries who plan three to twelve months in Argentina.
  • Applicants with a contract or steady client records ready to upload.
  • Mercosur and associated-state nationals, who pay half the fees.

Consider skipping it if:

  • Your stay is under three months. Tourist rules may be enough, and US citizens can stay up to 90 days without a visa. The question of digital nomad visa vs tourist visa is covered separately.
  • Your passport needs a tourist visa for Argentina.
  • Your clients are based in Argentina, since the permit covers work for people and companies abroad.
  • You want a path to permanent residence.

Most applicants will base themselves in a city. The Buenos Aires guide covers cost of living and time zone fit. Readers comparing neighbors can also read about Uruguay’s digital nomad visa.
